Biography:
Artemisia, Queen of Halicarnassus, a Greek city in Caria, is noted by Herodotus in his Histories for siding with Xerxes, king of Persia, against her native Greece during the Persian Wars in the 5th century BCE.
A widowed mother of one son, Artemisia was welcomed into the command structure of Xerxes’ forces and was greatly honoured by the Persian king (Thompson 1999, 49-50).
Under Xerxes, Artemisia was put in command of a Persian squadron of five ships manned by the Greeks of Asia Minor from Halicarnassus, Coa, Nisyria, and Calydia (Thompson 1999, 2011).
