Biography:

Artemisia, Queen of Halicarnassus, a Greek city in Caria, is noted by Herodotus in his Histories for siding with Xerxes, king of Persia, against her native Greece during the Persian Wars in the 5^th century BCE.

A widowed mother of one son, Artemisia was welcomed into the command structure of Xerxes’ forces and was greatly honoured by the Persian king (Thompson 1999, 49-50).

Under Xerxes, Artemisia was put in command of a Persian squadron of five ships manned by the Greeks of Asia Minor from Halicarnassus, Coa, Nisyria, and Calydia (Thompson 1999, 2011).
